Here is a list (which I may update as the spirit moves me) of things that were extremely common parts of my growing up experience, but would entirely mystify my kids. Obviously there is a lot of "pop culture" discussion of this phenomenon (as in, "Do you remember Howdy Doody?") However, I want to focus on some physical items that, at a certain time, everybody knew about and took for granted. I have not, for example, included records. Those are still floating around, there are stores devoted to them, and most kids know what they are even if they haven't experienced listening to them. I am thinking of things that have pretty much disappeared and now no one under a certain age remembers them.
Flash bulbs
Remember the blue ones, how they smelled after they popped? The peculiar noise they made and how they felt, warm, when they came out of the flash attachment? My kids don't.
Transoms
When was the last time you saw one of these windows over doors, ones that opened by pulling or pushing a metal rod up and down?
No drafts
Every car had them. Does any car have them now? Unlike running boards, they have disappeared.
